ENGLISH AT BITTERN PRIMARY SCHOOL

Bittern Primary School provides a challenging and innovative English curriculum that meets the needs of all students.

The school’s English curriculum is based on

AUSVELS and is organised around the interaction of three interrelated strands. Together these strands focus on developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, speaking, reading, viewing, and writing.

The strands are:

?

Language: knowing about the English language.

?

Literature: understanding, appreciating, responding to, analysing and creating literature.

?

Literacy: expanding the repertoire of English usage.

The processes of listening, speaking, reading, viewing and writing are interrelated and the learning of one often supports and extends learning of the others.

At Bittern Primary School the English curriculum ensures that students:

? learn to listen to, read, view, speak, write, create and reflect on increasingly complex and sophisticated spoken, written and multimodal texts across a growing range of contexts with accuracy, fluency and purpose.

? appreciate, enjoy and use English language in all its variations and develop a sense of its richness and power to evoke feelings, convey information, form ideas, facilitate interaction with others, entertain, persuade and argue.

? understand how Standard Australian English works in its spoken and written forms and in combination with non-linguistic forms of communication to create meaning.

? develop interest and skills in inquiring into aspects of texts and develop an informed appreciation of literature.

Classroom programs will include:

? Big Books

? reading journals

? literature appreciation

? guided reading

? writer’s notebooks

? daily writing covering a range of text types

? use of multi-media across all curriculum areas

? focussed spelling instruction based on THRASS

? specific instruction in age appropriate English grammar, both written and oral

? oral language development and instruction including presentations on a range of topics

The English curriculum is supported by a Reading Recovery program which provides a one on one program for year one students who may be experiencing difficulty in learning to read and write.

At Bittern Primary School we strive to provide a positive, informed learning environment that nurtures and celebrates student achievement and encourages a positive attitude to all aspects of the English curriculum
